A Decade of Planetary Health Impact, A Future of Hope and Action
Planetary Health Turns 10!
“By unsustainably exploiting nature’s resources, human civilisation has flourished but now risks substantial health effects from the degradation of nature’s life support systems in the future.” -report of The Rockefeller Foundation–Lancet Commission on Planetary Health, 2015
What began as a commission report linking human health with changing Earth systems has grown into a vibrant global movement spanning approximately 500 member organizations across academia, policy, healthcare, and civil society. In 2025 we mark the 10th anniversary of both the field of Planetary Health and the Planetary Health Alliance (PHA).
Throughout 2025, PHA and our members are commemorating this milestone through a series of initiatives focused on accelerating action for Planetary Health:
Research & Policy Impact
Our community continues to generate crucial evidence for decision-makers. Members are informing global policy, while targeted research on health impacts demonstrates how Planetary Health frameworks guide real-world solutions.

Education & Youth Leadership
A wave of new educational programs, faculty positions, institutes, centers and initiatives is transforming how we prepare the next generation of Planetary Health leaders. We’re seeing Planetary Health education take root globally.
PHA’s Campus Ambassador program and Next Generation Network are stronger than ever, with activated and capable youth leaders making a difference in their own communities and collaborating across regions.
- Keep an eye on PHA’s repository of educational resources for all ages to discover new materials relevant to present-day challenges and future health threats.
Global Gatherings
Key events throughout 2025 will bring our community together, including Earth Day (April), the Planetary Health Annual Meeting (October), and COP30 in Brazil (November).
Community Action
From Armenia to Zimbabwe, Planetary Health principles are being put into practice. Our Regional Hubs are convening and showing how professional networks can drive systemic change.
“Citizens often feel powerless to act in the face of global forces, but real opportunity exists to build on successful civil society movements that have transformed the prospects for health for many who were previously marginalised.” -report of The Rockefeller Foundation–Lancet Commission on Planetary Health, 2015
Looking Forward
As we reflect on a decade of progress and change, the urgency of our mission has never been clearer. Climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental degradation continue to threaten human health and well-being. Yet the growth of our movement – now spanning 80+ countries and diverse sectors – gives us enough hope to take action.
The challenges ahead require collaboration and commitment like none ever before. Through our educational initiatives, policy engagement, storytelling programs, and research dissemination, the Alliance will keep pushing toward a Great Transition to a world where we fully realize that the health of people and planet are synonymous – and we behave accordingly.
