Nikolaus is a medical doctor and epidemiologist, currently as a research fellow in environmental epidemiology at Karolinska Institutet (Sweden).

He holds a PhD in public health from Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (Germany), for which he examined clinical cancer epidemiology through field research in Sub-Saharan Africa (Namibia, Republic of Congo). Nikolaus also holds a master’s in public health epidemiology from Karolinska Institutet, where he is engaged in supporting the institution’s climate and health strategy, having served as a two-time planetary health campus ambassador and currently developing the third iteration of the Planetary Health Report Card.

Nikolaus also works with the German Alliance on Climate Change and Health (KLUG) with a focus on research and policy in societal and health care resilience facing extreme weather events, and has published a book on climate mitigation in primary care. He teaches at multiple universities in Sweden and Germany, speaks six languages, and sings in a choir.
