Connecting Planetary Boundaries and Planetary Health

A resilient and stable Earth system is crucial for human health

Share The Lancet Commentary

There is ample evidence that global environmental change is impacting human health. A new commentary in The Lancet calls for a bold next step: aligning the work of Earth system science and Planetary Health to systematically connect Earth system stability with human health.

The timing is significant. This month marks 10 years since a Rockefeller Foundation–Lancet Commission report established the field and social movement of Planetary Health in 2015. Today’s commentary signals an evolution in global knowledge and collaboration as leading researchers from the Planetary Health and Planetary Boundaries communities align their work.

JUST RELEASED! “Connecting planetary boundaries and planetary health: a resilient and stable Earth system is crucial for human health”

Exactly 10 years after the landmark 2015 Rockefeller Foundation–Lancet Commission established the field of #PlanetaryHealth, a new commentary marks a significant step forward: researchers from the Planetary Health and Planetary Boundaries communities are aligning efforts to confront today’s interconnected global crises.

First introduced in 2009, the #PlanetaryBoundaries framework defines safe operating limits for nine critical Earth system processes—such as #Climate, #Biodiversity, and #Freshwater use—that are increasingly disrupted by human activity.

This new collaboration represents a vital scientific bridge between Earth system stability and human health, and calls for an urgent, integrated global response to rising health risks driven by planetary destabilization.
