The George Institute for Global Health is a leading independent global medical research institute with a mission is to improve the health of millions of people worldwide, particularly those living in disadvantaged circumstances, by challenging the status quo and using innovative approaches to prevent and treat non-communicable diseases and injury.

Aligned with The George Institute’s commitment to improving the health of millions of people worldwide, a Planetary Health lens has increasingly become embedded in our research and advocacy. Our Planetary Health Working Group, conducts research, build collaborations and conduct advocacy activities that build momentum towards a more sustainable future. By joining the Planetary Health Alliance, we commit to working together, and leveraging our expertise and networks, to advance the Planetary Health agenda.

We consider Planetary Health intergenerationally and from the perspective of both high-income countries and low- and middle-income countries – as a global organisation, we strive to engage multiple disciplines and voices and collaborate across disciplines and national boundaries to better understand and act on planetary health issues as it is presented in our long-term Planetary Health Research Strategy.

The Global Health Academy is a vibrant, evidence led academic community and cross-disciplinary structure. We showcase, support and help enable global health research, learning and networks – advancing the University’s global ambitions and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Greenzine is excited to partner with the Global Planetary Health Alliance to expand our coverage and offer support to young and aspiring climate advocates. The intersectional nature of the climate crisis, public health crisis, and biodiversity collapse demands creative and insightful storytelling to galvanize the public to demand transformative change. There are countless solutionists across the globe that are actively working to address the climate crisis, and we are so excited to amplify and support their voices by joining this community.

The IDEC Institute, Hiroshima University aims to establish a global interdisciplinary research center that links the disciplines of research on peace, science, engineering, agriculture and health sciences. For tackling various Planetary Health issues, we will implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) from the aspect of education and research by promoting flexible and innovative transdisciplinary research and providing a place for technological innovation.

The Ocean Research & Conservation Association’s mission aligns with the Planetary Health Alliance’s commitment to understanding and addressing global environmental change and its health impacts. Specifically, we are focused on how anthropogenic nonpoint source pollution has accumulated in the environment to the point that it is impacting the health of humans and animals. Working in collaboration with the Planetary Health community, our goal is to understand and mitigate the health impacts of pollution, while simultaneously working to stop the pollution at its source.

Swansea Action for Sustainable Healthcare (SWASH) is a Swansea University society that works with health board medical professionals and medical school staff with the aim to reduce the environmental impact of education and healthcare. We assess this impact yearly via meetings with local healthcare professionals and analysis of our Planetary Health Report Card result which enables us to set goals to improve certain areas such as research and community outreach. Over the years we have run campaigns, research projects, sustainable prescribing locally, passed British Medical Association (BMA) motions regarding our curriculum, virtual networking and educational conferences / webinars. We look forward to collaborate within the Planetary Health Community and aim to network with other members, educate ourselves further on novel sustainable healthcare practice, find new opportunities for future initiatives and present our most current projects progression.

Swasti is a global health equity CSO aiming to add 100 million healthy days to the lives of the most marginalized by 2030. Established in 2004, we believe that this can only be achieved through people-centered health systems. Swasti’s scale of operations in the past has covered 25 countries across Asia, Africa, and Latin America, reaching over 2 million people from diverse communities, such as sex workers, migrants, farmers, factory workers, and slum dwellers.

Over the years, as a public health organization, we have come to realize that it is insufficient to focus on interventions related to health without considering planetary health and its impact on the communities. We especially realize the significance of climate change on the vulnerable communities we work with and the multiple, intersecting burdens it causes in terms of loss of health and livelihood. This ranges from increased heat-related illness and mortality to increased spread of vector-borne and water-borne pathogens causing malaria, dengue, cholera, and other diseases, as well as rising food insecurity due to changing crop production patterns. Climate change also creates more disaster-prone areas and humanitarian settings that have serious implications for Swasti’s work in community and public health.

Through membership in the Planetary Health Alliance, we hope to learn from the experiences of other organizations working in the Global South in implementing planetary health interventions for vulnerable communities. This can include technical support and consultations, joint research, advocacy, and capacity building on various planetary health issues.

We remain committed to achieving a vision where climate change is mitigated, and vulnerable communities enjoy good health and well-being despite the major climatic risks they currently face.

The Swedish Organization for Global Health (SOGH) is a student-led organization at Karolinska Institutet, primarily comprised of international students representing the Biomedical Science, Health Economics & Policy, Global Health and Public Health programmes. The international landscape of the organization means that there is a wide range of cultural backgrounds; the members of SOGH would be pleased to contribute to the translation of the planetary health materials in their native languages and perhaps mold them to the cultural contexts they’re familiar with. In addition, SOGH often organizes educational seminars and workshops, sometimes collaborating with other organizations in the public health and environmental sustainability sphere. We are hoping that being members of the network will help us connect with other organizations working at the nexus of health and the environment. We would love to get to know the other members of the PHA network and share ideas on how to more effectively apply the planetary health values to our current activities as well as potentially start new ones. Lastly, we are committed to promoting the PHA Next Generation Network to the members of our group. We are excited to join the network and see what opportunities await!

The SweetLab at Portland State University develops and implements “Internet of Things” sensor technologies designed to improve the collection of, and action on, data in global health programs. We deploy and study high efficiency cookstoves, water pumps, household water filters, sanitation systems, pedestrian footbridges and other appropriate technologies in fifteen countries. The SweetLab joined the Planetary Health Alliance to increase collaborations across engineering, public health, social enterprise and public policy domains to further the positive impact of health and environmental programs.

Planetary Health strives for a young generation of professionals able to work across boundaries. Through its multi- and inter-disciplinary teaching, as well as through its research activities, the Thammasat University’s School of Global Studies contributes to Planetary Health approaches and objectives. It involves students and faculty alike in Planetary Health learning and research, and takes part in the Planetary Health Alliance in sharing ideas and materials and through participation in debates, conferences, and dissemination of PHA products.

The Big Fix Ltd is an umbrella organisation for The Big Fix Media, Blue Mountains Pluriversity, Blackheath Community Farm, and the social enterprise incubator Edgy Blue Mountains. The mission of The Big Fix is to change the story to grow a collaborative solutions-focused culture. The organisation uses a cross-sector and interdisciplinary approach to demonstrate how we can redesign our systems so that all species can thrive.

Since its first issue (October 5, 1823), the journal has strived to make science widely available so that medicine can serve, and transform society, and positively impact the lives of people. Over the past two centuries, The Lancet has sought to address urgent topics in our society, initiate debate, put science into context, and influence decision makers around the world.

The Lancet Countdown: Tracking Progress on Health and Climate Change is an international research collaboration, dedicated to tracking the world’s response to climate change, and the health benefits that emerge from this transition. Reporting annually in The Lancet, it will follow a series of indicators, demonstrating that this transition is possible, that it has already begun, but that more work is needed.

The foundation “Gesunde Erde – Gesunde Menschen” (Healthy Planet – Healthy People) was created in 2020 by German physician, science journalist, bestselling non-fiction author and TV host Dr. Eckart von Hirschhausen to promote public awareness of the principle: healthy people can only exist on a healthy planet.
We are dedicated to this principle and are working both center stage and behind the scenes to provide the missing link: climate communication that reaches, moves and inspires people to action – with a focus on solutions, a visionary approach and a good sense of humor.

The Scottish Managed Sustainable Health Network (SMaSH) provides a mechanism though which partners can collaborate to lead and motivate change, at a pace and scale that improves sustainability, and in a way which maximises health and equity. The network contributes to Planetary Health through highlighting the role the wide public health system has to play in sustainable energy and resource use, reductions in environmental vulnerability, and realising the potential for co-benefits in human health.

Shenandoah University has long been interested in Planetary Health. We have been commended for being a “green” campus and we have several degree programs that are specifically related to Planetary Health and the impact on the health of our citizens as a result. As a member of the Planetary Health Alliance, Shenandoah University, and specifically the School of Health Professions encourages student and faculty involvement in Planetary Health Alliance events and projects.

The National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) is part of the Smithsonian Institution, the world’s preeminent museum and research complex. The Museum is dedicated to inspiring curiosity, discovery, and learning about the natural world through its unparalleled research, collections, exhibitions, and education outreach programs. Opened in 1910, the green-domed museum on the National Mall was among the first Smithsonian building constructed exclusively to house the national collections and research facilities.

We, the Sociedad Chilena de Salud Planetaria (Planetary Health Chilean Society), make this statement of collaboration with the Planetary Health Alliance, in order to express our commitment to actively participate and work together to further planetary health in Chile and worldwide.
