Marking a decade of Planetary Health, this series features stories from our member organizations, reflecting the movement’s growth, impact, and vision for a healthier future for both people and the planet.
Rooted in the heart of Central Asia, Planetary Health has become a guiding framework for education, research, and community action at Osh State University’s International Medical Faculty. The campus in southern Kyrgyzstan serves 4,000 students from over 20 countries, and has embedded Planetary Health into undergraduate, Master’s, and PhD programs. A new Master’s in Nutrition Science, co-developed with European partners, emphasizes sustainable diets – like the Planetary Health Diet – along with resilient food systems and nutrition equity.
OshSU also builds global partnerships to confront urgent environmental health challenges in Kyrgyzstan. In collaboration with Science Tokyo, researchers are investigating air pollution and its health impacts, helping shape national environmental and public health planning. With Polish partner WSG University, OshSU launched the RITA initiative to embed pro-ecological practices into campus operations and education. Through workshops and exhibitions based on successful Polish models of sustainability and climate action, the project engages leaders, students, and youth on Planetary Health priorities. Building on these efforts, OshSU aims to establish the Central Asia Regional Hub – a center for education, research, and cross-border collaboration.
