Connecting Bogotá’s Urban Households to Fresh Local Foods Through Agroecological Markets

The Agroecological Markets Network of Bogotá Region connects local farmers with urban consumers to advance sustainable food systems, strengthen livelihoods, and promote Planetary Health.

The Red de Mercados Agroecológicos de Bogotá Región (Agroecological Markets Network of Bogotá Region) unites farmers, promoters, and consumers working to build sustainable, fair, and resilient food systems. By strengthening local links between rural producers and urban consumers, the network fosters solidarity, supports the transition to agroecology, and promotes respect for nature’s limits.

Through its community markets, the network uplifts small-scale and older producers, preserves traditional seeds and knowledge, and defends land, food sovereignty, and the natural commons. Despite limited public support and the prevalence of ultra-processed foods, members are advancing change—creating sustainable markets, expanding access to healthy foods, and demonstrating measurable benefits for people and the planet.

Together, they embody the principles of Planetary Health—connecting ecological well-being, livelihoods, and human health through the transformation of food systems.

The network’s members include:

  • Mercado Agroecológico Tierra Viva – A biweekly market in Bogotá’s Parkway sector offering fresh, ecological products alongside cultural and educational activities, supported by the Participatory Guarantee System (PGS).

  • Mercado de la Tierra Slow Food Bogotá – Part of the global Slow Food movement, this weekly market promotes biodiversity, fair trade, and responsible consumption through local agroecological products and workshops.

  • La Canasta – A home-delivery platform partnering with 50–60 farms in Cundinamarca to bring fresh, chemical-free food directly to consumers at fair prices.

  • Sembrando Confianza – A program of the Proyectar Sin Fronteras Foundation connecting 65 farmers and delivering 300 agroecological products weekly, pairing every box with educational content and community impact initiatives.
