Josep M. Antó, MD, PhD, is Emeritus Professor of Medicine at Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF). He is also the Founding Scientific Director of the Barcelona Institute of Global Health (ISGlobal).
He has worked in medical research for over four decades. During this time, he led pioneering studies on chronic respiratory diseases. He has focused particularly on environmental determinants and disease prevention.
At UPF, he served as Vice-Rector for Research. At IMIM (Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute), he chaired the Respiratory and Environmental Health Research Unit and later became Director. He also founded both CREAL and CIBER Epidemiología y Salud Pública.
Moreover, he has contributed internationally. For example, he co-led the MeDALL-EU-FP7 project on childhood allergy, which pioneered systems medicine approaches. Since 2016, he has driven planetary health initiatives at ISGlobal and UPF. Consequently, he promotes the integration of environmental sustainability with public health.
Currently, he serves as Co-Chair of the European Center of the Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change. He has received multiple honors from the European Respiratory Society, including the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021.
