At Climate Week NYC, officials from the United Kingdom and Chile promoted ocean-based actions to lower greenhouse gas emissions. Some of the mitigation steps under consideration include a phaseout of offshore oil and gas drilling, efforts to decarbonize shipping, investments in offshore wind and other renewable energy, and commitments to enhance sustainable fisheries and conservation of marine ecosystems.

Indigenous Territories can safeguard human health depending on the landscape structure and legal status. Communications Earth & Environment.

Researchers analyzed 20 years of data across the Amazon to assess how Indigenous Territories, their legal recognition, and surrounding landscapes influence fire-related and zoonotic/vector-borne diseases. Findings reveal that Indigenous Territories can reduce fire-related disease incidence and, depending on forest cover and fragmentation, help mitigate or amplify zoonotic/vector-borne disease risks.

Unseen scars: Understanding the mental health burdens of climate change on indigenous and rural Peruvian women. PLOS Climate.

Researchers highlight the significant but often overlooked mental health consequences of climate change affecting Indigenous and rural Peruvian women. Through walking interviews with 48 women across Peru’s diverse ecological regions, they documented how environmental disruptions trigger psychological distress that intensifies existing social vulnerabilities.
