In Memory of Joanna MacyIn the first movement, our infancy as a species, we felt no separation from the natural world around us. Trees, rocks, and plants surrounded us with a living presence as intimate and pulsing as our own bodies.

This month marks a major milestone for the Planetary Health community: 10 years since the groundbreaking Rockefeller Foundation–Lancet Commission report launched the field of Planetary Health and led to the founding of the Planetary Health Alliance. In the decade since, our community has grown exponentially, united by a shared commitment to protect the health of people and the planet in a rapidly changing world.
Today, the evidence is clearer than ever—global environmental change is impacting human health. A new commentary co-authored by leaders in the Planetary Health and Planetary Boundaries communities calls for the next bold step: aligning our fields to systematically connect Earth system stability with human health. Since its release, the commentary has sparked global attention, with coverage in Business Today, Forbes, and a powerful op-ed by Planetary Health champion and co-author of “Net Positive” Paul Polman. This is a pivotal moment for our movement—one that could transform how we understand and respond to the health of both people and planet. Read the commentary and help amplify this critical message with your media contacts!
As we reflect on a decade of progress, we’re also looking ahead with excitement. This month alone, we’ve celebrated many accomplishments—including the launch of the second year of the Next Generation Youth Council, comprised of 11 individuals representing nine regions around the world. The Planetary Health Caribbean Regional Hub has transitioned leadership from Dr. Donald Simeon to Dr. Sandeep Maharaj. Thank you, Donald, for your outstanding leadership over the past four years!
We’re also honored to share that the Planetary Health Annual Meeting has received UNESCO Patronage, recognizing the conference’s alignment with UNESCO’s mission to advance education, science, culture, and communication in support of Planetary Health. We hope to see you in October!
It’s exciting to see creativity and collaboration elevated in the Planetary Health space. We recently hosted a powerful film screening with Anne Poelina and look forward to welcoming Jason Davis on August 1 to explore climate storytelling through music composition and improvisation. Stay tuned for more sessions in our Planetary Health in the Arts Series! As we build momentum for the decade ahead, we’re not just marking a milestone—we’re shaping the next chapter of Planetary Health, grounded in urgency, hope, and collective action.
