Today, 55% of the world lives in cities—and another billion are expected to move to urban areas in the coming decade. Our design and construction of cities showcase some of the greatest human innovations yet also deepen the crises we face. From the urban heat island effect to plastics in building materials that release toxic chemicals during fires, our built environments are worsening climate risks while disconnecting us from nature.

Around the world, innovators and community leaders are proving that a different path is possible. Insights from the Planetary Health Cities Symposium and Habitable’s new report call for a fundamental reimagining of the built environment: one that prioritizes resilience, equity, and Planetary Health over short-term gains.

Among the resources and community voices in this issue, you will find many examples of how cities can be transformed into safer, healthier, and more habitable places for all.
